A Quick Chat With Mr Industry
Congrats on the release of your debut EP! Can you give us some back story on the EP’s title and themes?
Thank you! None of us can remember exactly when and why the phrase came about, but it quickly became a mantra and then a song title and lyric not long after! When it finally came time to consider a title for the EP, it seemed very fitting, as much of the intention behind writing these songs was to try and express ourselves in our own way; and trust that people would be interested in what we had to offer! I’d say there’s also a loose theme threaded throughout the EP related to many anxieties a young 20 something experiences: loss of innocence, relationships, moving out / leaving home plus a good measure of general existentialism - and how we all go on our own personal journey to navigate a lot of those feelings.
What’s your personal favourite song off the EP?
I will do my best to speak for the whole band here. I would have to say the title track DTMOIR - I think we’d all more or less agree. It’s the last one we wrote; and to me it’s a really sweeping, ambitious track for us and it encompasses a lot of the maturation of the band as well, with it being the most experimental track but also self assured I think. The song went through so many iterations before it got to where it is now but the finished product is something we’re all proud of.
How long have you been making music as Mr Industry?
We all met early in 2021 whilst studying at CIT (Canberra Institute of Technology music course specifically). Brendan and Seb had been school friends beforehand. We all conveniently had classes together and quickly realised we all liked the same music and enjoyed playing together. Charlie joined a year or so later after COVID had subsided and gigs had returned. (He came to study at CIT and also had some mutuals with us.) It was wild to me, watching him seamlessly fit in and bounce off of us so quickly.
What’s your favourite show you’ve played so far?
We played a show early last year supporting Haru Nemuri, it was a really special night as we are big fans of her! Harutosyura was a really big album for Charlie in high school too so seeing him achieve a dream in real time was pretty special. We were also still very new to Melbourne, having only lived there for about 6 months - so playing a show like that was a really affirming moment and great motivation to keep pushing.
Which album/s do you have on repeat right now?
We all listen to a wide range of stuff and tastes are constantly changing so I won’t try to guess what everyone else is really digging at the moment out of fear of a potential misquote hah. But I’ve been getting back into Burial lately. I've loved Untrue for a long time but just recently got into his compilation Songs 2011 - 2019 and it’s been really hitting the spot. Also really loving YHWH Nailgun’s debut this year, the new Jane Remover record and Placement’s debut that I believe dropped only a couple weeks ago.
What was the first gig / concert you ever went to?
I’m pretty sure my first concert was a Hi-5 concert, I was about 18 months old and my mum says I absolutely hated it because it was so loud and the screaming was distressing for me. Oh the irony.
What’s planned for the rest of 2025?
We’ve got an EP launch show on August 2nd at the Evelyn with The Munch from ADL and local faves Flossy and Camomile, which will be a blast. A lot of plans aren’t set in stone yet beyond that but I know we’d like to continue capitalising on the drive and enthusiasm we have for the band right now, which means more shows and hopefully more writing!
We’ve got some ideas starting to brew about where we might take the next project but we’re waiting for a good window of time to really hunker down and get writing.
Before that, probably a nice little holiday for everyone, a bit of time away usually helps us all come into the studio with a fresh perspective on where we want to take the band.
