A Quick Chat with Velvet Trip
Tell us a bit about the Glimmers EP. What does it mean to you and what do you want people to take away from it?
Glimmers was a place for me to compartmentalise my lived experiences and process my emotions through music and storytelling. My aim was to make dance music with introspective lyrics. Beyond that, I wanted to challenge myself and push my songwriting into a space that I haven't explored before, both thematically and sonically.
What are Glimmers?
“Glimmers” are little moments that happen throughout the day that spark joy and put your mind at ease – the opposite of a trigger. Sometimes it’s easy to lose perspective and miss all those beautiful little moments. This EP is full of Glimmers and listening back reminds me of how far I’ve come.
Are there any inspirations you look to beyond music when writing or performing?
I get a lot of inspiration just by being in nature in all honesty. I have a very active brain, so if I need inspiration, I'll go for a bush walk or somewhere quiet without the chaos of the city distracting me and make a bunch of rogue voice notes.
In contrast to that, people and their stories inspire me too. Writing this EP wasn't just about reflecting on my own experiences, but also what people around me were going through as well.
What are the origins of your music journey? When did it start and how did it manifest into Velvet Trip?
I started playing music super young with my dad. He is a blues musician and taught me guitar at an early age, so the blues is my bread and butter. I played in a handful of hardcore and metal bands as a teenager growing up in Byron Bay, the home of Parkway Drive lol. I used to have snakebites and a fringe to put it into perspective.. Let me tell ya, I’ve been through some phases and so has my music taste. I moved to Sydney when I was 20 to pursue an acting career whilst also playing in a 7-piece Psych Rock band called Kimono Dragqueens. I loved playing in the band, but I needed a place to put my own ideas, thus Velvet Trip was born!
What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording?
It varies, honestly. Sometimes it's sitting with a guitar, sometimes it's randomly singing a melody into my phone, or sometimes it’s from making a beat on my computer.. It just depends on what's accessible at the time, but I'm generally always thinking about a song or an idea for a song. Glimmers was different because I was opening myself to collaboration more than ever, so I had to push myself in a different way. I'm really grateful for Toby, Clay and Arne and proud of what we have created together.
What do you have planned for 2025?
A whole lot more music, I tell ya what.
Lastly and most importantly, who's your band / artist crush?
Wet Leg duh.
