REVIEW - DIIV - Northcote Theatre, Melbourne
Written by: Lachlan Bradford
DIIV hit the stage in Melbourne with a set that felt more like an experience than your standard gig. Touring off the back of their latest album Frog in Boiling Water, the show was built around that body of work and it really landed.
Highlights from the new stuff included “In Amber,” “Sombre the Drums,” and “Brown Paper Bag”. All of them hitting that hazy, hypnotic sweet spot DIIV does so well. The band was seriously tight. Gliding across the stage, layering those swirling guitars and locked in rhythms. You could tell they’ve been playing together for a long time. Everything felt sharp without trying too hard.
Old favourites like “Blankenship,” “Under the Sun,” and “Horsehead” gave the crowd plenty to lean into. And they finished with “Doused,” which packed a proper punch to end the night.
Visually, the show had a lot going on, in a good way. There were heavy political and cultural themes woven through the screen projections, and they matched the tone of the set perfectly. It felt like a show with real thought behind it. Not just sound for the sake of sound, but a whole mood.
